Turkey: Call for Reform and Unexpected Success of Some Minor Parties

The Turkey’s 2024 local election that was held on March 31, 2024, has marked significant signs for potential political change in the structure of Turkey’s government. The results that CHP recorded by succession over AKP with winning the municipalities of many major cities and cities that were previously under AKP’s governance. 

The rise of the New Welfare Party as Turkey’s third party in the elections was unexpected. The party succeeded in securing 69 mayoral positions across Turkey. The party’s ideological base highlights the influence that the party would have had on the Islamist and conservative voters.

In its election agenda, the New Welfare Party clearly emphasized on social justice, ethical governance, and empowerment of the overall society, consequently making it the possible alternative for the dissatisfied citizens. This article analyzes the factors that would have drove the success of the party in the election, possible impacts on Turkey’s political structure, and the effects of political diversification in the attempts for reforms within the country.
